  The Super-Size Gas Mask have a Window-Cator Canister, which contains an indicator to show the effectiveness of the canister against certain contaminants.

The small round window in the front of the canister is an end-of-service-life indicator (ESLI). When the shade of the ESLI changes from its "Starting" color to the "Time-To-Change" colors, the canister is beginnning to lose its effectiveness and must be replaced.

Principles of Operation: Upon inhalation, contaminated air enters the gas mask canister, where it is filtered before reaching the wearer, who breathes in only clean, fresh air. See Bulletin No. 1000-61, Key Elements of a Sound Respiratory Protection Program.

Approvals & Standards: All MSA gas masks are certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The specific numbers are shown under ordering information for each mask type.

Offer respiratory protection against a specific gas or group of gases, as indicated by canister identification. The gas mask assembly has the following Maximum Use Condition: Entry - 100x the Permissible Exposure Level; do not exceed the Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) concentration. Escape - contaminant concentrations up to the maximum use concentration of the gas mask (generally, 20,000 ppm (2% by volume); see canister selection chart for details), providing there is adequate oxygen (19.5% by volume) to support life. At these upper use conditions, the service time may be as short as 12 minutes. The Super-Size gas mask has an extra-large canister, which will last approximately twice as long as the equivalent Industrial-Size canister because of a larger volume of chemical fill.
